Frequently Asked Questions

The City has owned its fiber network for years, how is this service possible today?

The development of Sol Fiber (Shafter Online) has been many years in the making! The City of Shafter completed a full-scale Broadband Master Plan in 2024, and this Plan revealed the need for the City to begin focusing its attention on bringing fiber internet to the homes and businesses of Shafter.  After this decision was made, a Design-Engineering Package was solicited and completed in early 2025 and the need for a Public-Private Partnership with an internet service provider was approved by Council in the spring of 2025.  In July 2025, the City completed the steps necessary to partner with Smart Fiber Networks, dba Syber Fiber, and began expanding its current fiber optic network in early 2026 using grant funding.  Syber Fiber provides you the reliable internet service you enjoy today, and the City of Shafter provides the network infrastructure backbone needed to support this expansion.

SOL Fiber (“SOL” standing for Shafter Online) is the City of Shafter’s fiber internet service, created to provide residents and businesses with fast, reliable, locally supported connectivity. Our network is built to strengthen the community and support economic growth through modern infrastructure.  The service is provided to you by Syber Fiber and there are no contracts to join or extra fees that you pay on your bill!

Fiber-optic internet is an advanced type of internet connection that uses thin strands of glass or plastic fibers to transmit data as pulses of light. This technology enables exceptionally fast and reliable internet speeds, making it ideal for activities such as streaming, gaming, and video conferencing. Compared to traditional broadband connections, fiber-optic internet offers higher speeds, lower latency, and symmetrical upload and download speeds, providing users with a seamless online experience.

Symmetrical means the same both ways and is often referred to a “symmetrical internet.”  This applies to the internet connection to your home or business that has the same speeds for receiving data (downloading) as you have for sending data (uploading).  An an example, if you purchase the 500 Mbps plan from SOL Fiber, you can expect those speeds when downloading a album or movie AND when uploading your pictures from a device to the cloud!

To determine your current internet speed, you can perform a speed test using free online tools such as Ookla or www.fast.com.

While we currently do not have an ETA for your neighborhood, we are continually re-evaluating where in the community we have the most interest and demand for services so we can plan our network growth accordingly.

Shafter Online stands for a free and open internet for all. We support net neutrality to ensure that everyone has equal access to online content, without interference or discrimination. Our network is built with plenty of bandwidth in mind in order to support this core value…you will never be throttled due to high-traffic or times of day!

Shafter Online offers three speed options to fit different needs: 100 Mbps, 500 Mbps, and 1 Gbps.

  • 100 Mbps (Megabits per second) is ideal for light internet use such as browsing, email, and streaming on a few devices. Great for smaller households or basic connectivity needs.

  • 500 Mbps is perfect for families, remote workers, and homes with multiple connected devices. It supports HD streaming, video calls, online gaming, and smart home technology.

  • 1 Gbps (Gigabits per second) is best for power users and businesses that rely on high-speed connectivity for large file transfers, cloud applications, video conferencing, or multiple simultaneous users.

If you’re unsure which speed is right for you, our team is happy to help assess your needs and recommend the best option.

Shafter Online delivers fiber-optic internet, offering symmetrical upload and download speeds, lower latency, and more reliable performance compared to traditional cable or DSL.
